Date
The Coptic text was written no later than ad 350, but a date for the original Greek text, which the Coptic is likely translated from, is uncertain.
• Lapham proposes an early date in the reign of Trajan (ad 90–110), placing it chronologically alongside the late canonical Gospels (Lapham, Peter: the Myth, the Man and the Writings, 82).
• Schenke situates the text alongside the wandering ascetics of the second century ad (Schenke, “Die Taten des Petrus und der zwölf Apostel,” 13–19).
• Parrott agrees with a second century dating due to the text’s similarities with the Shepherd of Hermas (Parrott, “The Acts of Peter and the Twelve Apostles,” 289).
• Molinari sets the text in the third or fourth century, following the Decian persecution in Egypt (ad 249–251), due to the themes of rejection of the material goods and concern for physical and spiritual healing (Molinari, The Acts of Peter and the Twelve Apostles, 289).
• Czachesz argues that the Hymn of the Pearl originated in second- or third-century Syria, but the text’s final redaction occurred in a Pachomian monastery in Upper Egypt around ad 347–367 (Czachesz, Apostolic Commission Narratives, 182).
