Overview and Significance

The Douay-Rheims (DR) is a translation of the Latin Vulgate text of the Old and New Testaments, though the preface states that the translators “diligently conferred with Greeke, and other editions in divers [various] languages.” The New Testament section of the DR has been influential on subsequent translations, theological debates, and the English language. The DR translation was widely printed and read until the mid-20th century.
