Purpose
The DR translation was originally intended to provide English speakers with a Bible translation that exhibited a strong Catholic Counter-Reformation theological standpoint. Originally, the DR Bible was not intended to provide Roman Catholic laity with Scripture in English, although it later served this purpose. In contrast to Protestant English-language versions, the underlying translation philosophy was reverence for the Latin Vulgate as the received, revelatory text of the Church. In the DR translation, this is defined by the conviction that Latin clarity of definition is preferable to comprehensibility in English.
