Book of the Three

The books of Haggai, Zechariah, and Malachi are often grouped as the “Book of the Three” (Redditt, Introduction, 198). Haggai and Zechariah 1–8 share a common superscription. Zechariah 9 may have grown directly out Haggai’s failed hopes regarding Zerubbabel. Zechariah 10 dropped the expectation of a Davidic ruler; Zechariah 11 explained the reasons; and Zechariah 12–14 amplified that explanation. Malachi was attached to Haggai-Zechariah by picking up key connectors from Zech 9 and 12 to use as a superscription.
