Roman Republic
The Roman Empire was preceded by the Roman Republic, which lasted 500 years and was limited to the Italian peninsula for much of its history. Due to a series of military campaigns during the second and first centuries bc, Roman territory expanded to encompass most of the Mediterranean region as well as several territories in southern Europe. The final years of the Republic were marked by a series of civil wars and the rule of the triumvirates. The formal beginning of the Roman Empire is often dated to 27 bc, which is the year Octavian was made emperor and received the title Augustus.
