Name and Content

The name “Douay-Rheims” derives from the respective places of publication: The New Testament was published at Reims, France, in 1582, and the Old Testament was published in two volumes at the University of Douai, France, from 1609–1610. Following the Latin Vulgate, the Old Testament volume includes deuterocanonical texts (Tobit2 Maccabees). Only three texts in the DR are listed as apocryphal:

1. 3 Esdras

2. 4 Esdras

3. the Prayer of Manasseh

The organization of the DR Bible, including chapter and verse numbers, book names, and the order of books (as well as the order of Psalms), follows the Latin Vulgate and therefore differs from Protestant and contemporary English-language translations.
